Solar Panel Installation Sized To Your Roof And Bills: The Numbers Before You Buy
Solar panels sized from your usage and your roof, fitted by our specialist install partner and managed start to finish by the engineer who designs your job. New Mills and the High Peak, with roof checks out to Macclesfield, Manchester and Sheffield.
You’ve Had The Cold Calls About Free Panels And Government Schemes
A cold caller’s quota sets the panel count. Your usage and your roof should set it.
The script skips the questions that decide the size: your usage, when you use it and which way the roof faces.
The doubts, in homeowners’ own words:
- “If I use an internet company, who fixes it if it breaks next week?”
- “Will a small company an hour away actually turn up and stand behind it?”
Your usage sets the size, your roof sets the layout, and you see both numbers before anyone mentions panel count.

Solar Payback On A Typical High Peak Home
A worked example for a 4 kWp system on a south-facing roof in New Mills, Derbyshire.
- £548saved and earned in a year
- Year 16about when the panels have paid for themselves
| Year | Money back so far | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | £0 | £8,914 |
| 5 | £2,742 | £8,914 |
| 10 | £5,484 | £8,914 |
| 15 | £8,226 | £8,914 |
| 20 | £10,968 | £8,914 |
| 25 | £13,710 | £8,914 |
How we worked this out
One year: 874 kWh used at home × 26.32p = £230, plus 2,653 kWh exported × 12p = £318. Together, £548.
- System
- 4 kWp
- An example size for a south-facing roof in New Mills. Your survey sets the real one.
- Price
- £8,914
- £2,228 per kW: the government (DESNZ) average for 0 to 4 kW panels on existing homes in 2025/26, VAT included where it applied. Published 28 May 2026.
- Made in a year
- 3,527 kWh
- EU PVGIS 5.3 estimate for New Mills: 35° pitch, facing south, 14% system losses. Run 24 September 2026.
- Used at home
- 874 kWh
- MCS guidance MGD 003, table 6-2: a household in for half the day, using 3,500 kWh a year.
- Each unit you use
- 26.32p
- Ofgem price cap, GB average by Direct Debit, 1 October to 31 December 2026. Checked 24 September 2026.
- Each unit you export
- 12p
- Outgoing Octopus flat export rate. Checked 24 September 2026.
- VAT
- 0%
- HMRC VAT Notice 708/6: panels, batteries and fitting in homes, until 31 March 2027.
A unit you use is worth more than twice a unit you export (26.32p against 12p), so running the washing machine in daylight, or adding a battery, raises the yearly figure.
No grant is counted. The 0% VAT relief covers every home and the government average already includes it. Export payments need an MCS certificate for the installation, so check that any quote names one.
An example, not a quote: prices held flat for 25 years, with no allowance for panel wear or tariff changes. Your survey replaces every figure with your roof, your bills and your tariff.
“My house is warmer with a heat pump than it was with a boiler”
Hear firsthand from our customer Fraser about how installing a heat pump has transformed his day to day living.
We’ve turned his cold 18th-century end terrace house into a comfortable, efficient home. No more waiting for the boiler to heat up the house in the morning.
Fraser’s property now sits at a consistent 19°C all year round.
Answered Before The Scaffolding Goes Up

-
Is solar worth it this far north?
On the right roof with the right sizing, yes. We size and quote solar panels for your home rather than pointing at a national average.
-
Who fits the panels, and who do I call if something goes wrong?
Our specialist install partner fits the array, and the engineer who designs your job manages it start to finish. One company, one number, if you need us after.
-
Does my roof need work first?
We check its condition at the roof check. Better to hear that before the scaffolding goes up.
-
What if my roof is shaded or faces the wrong way?
Then we say so. A shaded or wrong-facing roof gets a straight no before you spend anything.
-
Who handles the connection and export paperwork?
We do. Design, survey, paperwork and job management stay in-house, the same way we run our heat pump jobs. Our specialist install partner supplies the crew that fits the array.
-
How do I know I’m not being sold more panels than I need?
Your usage and your bills set the size. If a bigger array doesn’t pay back faster, we quote the smaller one.
Common Questions About Solar
About a week for the installation itself, once the design is agreed and the quote is fixed.
We cover and protect everything before the scaffolding goes up: garden, paths and the roofline included.
Panels still generate on a cloudy day, at a lower output. Your roof check works out what that means for your usage and your bills.
Our office books it, the engineer who designs your job comes out to measure it, and our specialist install partner fits it. You deal with the same company throughout, from first call to handover.
On a house in England, rooftop solar panels count as permitted development, and that includes conservation areas and the Peak District National Park, so you don’t apply for planning permission. A listed building does need permission first, and flat-roof panels in a conservation area or the National Park need the council’s prior approval on how they look. We check your address at the survey and design the layout inside the limits, so you know before you sign whether anything needs to go to the council.
Yes. Tell us now and we design the roof and the wiring to take it later, so you don’t pay for a second survey. Battery storage and the full renewables package both have their own pages.
Your fixed quote prices your roof and your usage. As a guide, the government’s average for 0 to 4 kW on existing homes in 2025/26 was £2,228 per kW, and panels fitted in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.
Our 2-year workmanship guarantee on the install, running alongside the manufacturer’s warranty on the SolarWatt panels. We list each warranty line by line at handover.
