How Much Does a Boiler Service Cost, and How Often Do You Need One?
Book one service a year to keep your boiler guarantee valid, and set aside 1 to 3 hours for the engineer’s checklist.

Key Takeaways
- A standard boiler service with First Point costs £96 including VAT. The full in-depth service, the one we recommend, costs £300 including VAT. Both are fixed before the visit.
- Glow-worm estimates the average annual boiler service in 2026 at £109 to £120. Fantastic Services puts a standard service outside London and the South East at £70 to £120, and £90 to £150 inside it.
- Book a service once a year. HSE advises servicing gas appliances at least once a year, and Worcester Bosch, Baxi and Vaillant each make an annual service a condition of their boiler guarantees.
- Boiler Care from £12.99 a month includes the annual service plus priority booking and a labour discount, on a 12-month initial term.
- You book online through our form, and our office confirms a fixed arrival time inside a two-hour window.
In This Guide
Worcester Bosch puts it in one line on its guarantee page: yearly servicing is a condition of the guarantee, and you have to complete it each year to keep the guarantee valid (Worcester Bosch, Guarantee service, checked 13 October 2026). Baxi and Vaillant write the same condition into their own terms. A boiler service cost therefore buys you two things at once: a boiler the engineer has tested for safe burning, and a guarantee that still pays out when a part fails in year four.
With First Point, the standard boiler service costs £96 including VAT and the full in-depth service costs £300 including VAT. Both prices are fixed before the engineer arrives. We work from New Mills, and our engineers service gas boilers within about 20 miles of it.
What a Boiler Service Costs in 2026
National prices for a gas boiler service sit in a band about £50 wide, and where you live moves you up or down it. Glow-worm, the boiler manufacturer, estimates the average annual service in 2026 at between £109 and £120 (Glow-worm, Boiler service cost 2026, checked 13 October 2026). Fantastic Services, a national home services company, gives a fuller breakdown. Its 2026 cost guide puts a standard annual service at £70 to £120 outside London and the South East and £90 to £150 inside it, with VAT included (Fantastic Services, Boiler service cost guide, checked 13 October 2026).

Manufacturers’ own engineers charge more. Worcester Bosch prices its own guarantee services from £184 including VAT (Worcester Bosch, Guarantee service, checked 13 October 2026), and its terms accept a service by any Gas Safe registered engineer.
Our prices, on paper
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Standard service | £96 including VAT (£80 plus VAT) |
| Full in-depth service The Visit We Recommend | £300 including VAT (£250 plus VAT) |
Both prices are fixed and published, so you can set them against any quote you get. The in-depth service costs more than the national band, and it is the visit we recommend. The standard service suits you if a straight annual check is all you want.
Whichever service you book, the price stays as quoted. If the engineer finds a fault that needs more than a service, you get the finding and the price, and you decide whether the repair goes ahead.
What moves the price elsewhere
Where You Live
Two things move a service price elsewhere. Location is one: Fantastic Services puts London and the South East £20 to £40 higher than the rest of the UK.
What The Visit Includes
The other is what the visit includes, and a price on its own won’t tell you that, which is why we publish our checklist below.
A cheap service and a thorough one can carry the same name on an invoice. Before you book anyone, ask to see the list of checks the engineer works through.
What the Engineer Checks on a Service
Our engineers work through the same published checklist on each boiler. You can read it before you book, and you get a full report once the visit is done.
A service takes 1 to 3 hours. We book you a fixed arrival time inside a two-hour window, so you don’t lose half a day waiting in.
HSE puts a number on the safety side. It records around 7 deaths each year from gas-related carbon monoxide poisoning, and it advises that a CO alarm does not replace regular maintenance and safety checks by a Gas Safe registered engineer (HSE, Gas safety: home owners, page dated 6 November 2024). The flue gas analysis and the case seal check exist for that reason.

What a service doesn’t cover
A service finds faults. Fixing them is separate work, and you should know the rate before anyone picks up a spanner. We charge no call-out fee. The first hour of repair work is £96 including VAT at our local rate, you pay for the engineer’s time on site, and you hear the hourly rate when you book. If the fix needs a part, the engineer may need to come back once it arrives.
Sometimes a £300 repair beats a £3,000 boiler, and sometimes replacement is the better call. We tell you which, with the reasons, before you decide. If the answer points to a new boiler, our guide to how much a new boiler costs sets out our fitted prices. If the trouble sits in the radiators rather than the boiler, cold spots and sludge included, our power flush cost guide covers whether a flush is the fix.
Servicing an Ageing Boiler, and When to Stop
A service tells you how your boiler is doing on the day. Three or four years of reports read together show where it’s heading: the same part flagged as worn twice, a fault back after last winter’s repair, a warning that parts for your model are drying up.
The repair bills tell you more than the boiler’s age. Add up the last twelve months: the service, each repair at £96 including VAT for the first hour, the parts, and the evenings without heat while a part was on order. A single repair on a sound boiler is good value. A third call-out in one winter on a boiler with parts running out pays into a boiler you’ll replace anyway, so keep the service booked and price the replacement while the heating still works.
The replacement can be a heat pump. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off an eligible air source heat pump in England and Wales (GOV.UK, read 14 October 2026), and since 28 April 2026 installers have to take the grant off the upfront price (DESNZ, August 2026). Our heat pump installation page shows how we size one from a room-by-room heat loss, and our guide to what a heat pump costs to install and run sets national prices beside running costs. Grant claims run through MCS certification and ours is in progress, so ask at the survey where that stands.
How Often Should a Boiler Be Serviced?
Once a year. Safety advice, the manufacturer’s guarantee and, for landlords, the law all point to the same interval, and the guarantee is the one with money attached.
The safety advice
HSE advises that a Gas Safe registered engineer should service gas appliances, flues and pipework at least once a year, and check them for safety at least once every 12 months (HSE, Gas safety: home owners, page dated 6 November 2024). That advice covers the boiler in your kitchen whether it is two years old or twenty.
The manufacturer’s guarantee
Your boiler guarantee sets the deadline in writing. Three of the big makers put it like this:
- Worcester Bosch: yearly servicing is a condition of the guarantee, and you have to complete it each year to keep the guarantee valid. A Gas Safe registered engineer has to do the service on a gas boiler (Worcester Bosch, Guarantee service, checked 13 October 2026).
- Baxi: its warranties apply when the boiler is registered within 30 days of installation, the installer completes the Benchmark checklist, and the boiler gets an annual service. Miss a condition and the warranty reverts to the standard one year (Baxi, How long is a Baxi boiler warranty, checked 13 October 2026).
- Vaillant: its extended guarantee terms require a service on the appliance and the system once a year, and a claim asks for proof that you had the annual service done to the manufacturer’s requirements (Vaillant, guarantee terms and conditions for installers, checked 13 October 2026).
Which? lists forgetting the annual service as one of three common mistakes that can invalidate a boiler warranty, warning that a manufacturer may refuse to pay out (Which?, 22 October 2025). Read the guarantee papers that came with your boiler for its exact window, because each maker sets the timing in its own words.
The landlord rule
If you let a property, the law sets the interval for you. HSE says landlords need an annual gas safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer, a copy of the record to existing tenants within 28 days, and the record kept for at least two years (HSE, Gas safety check records, page dated 23 September 2024). A gas safety check and a full service are different visits. Fantastic Services’ 2026 guide puts a service with the landlord certificate at £90 to £150 outside London and the South East.
An aside for oil customers in the villages off the gas main: oil boilers have their own servicing rules, run through OFTEC registered technicians, and this guide sticks to gas.
Booking a Boiler Service Online With Us
You can book a boiler service online through the form on our boiler servicing page or our contact page. It asks what the job is, your name, email and phone number, and a short description, and our office replies within one working day.
The office finds a slot and confirms a fixed arrival time inside a two-hour window. On the day, the engineer works through the published checklist, and the certificate arrives by email after the visit. We set next year’s reminder at the same time, so the next service date isn’t yours to remember.
Phone bookings go through our office between 9am and 3pm on weekdays, for the next free slot. A boiler that has died with the house going cold is a different job, and our emergency page covers it.
Where our engineers go
First Point is based on Peak Road in New Mills. Day to day, our engineers service boilers in New Mills, Whaley Bridge, Furness Vale, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Chinley, Hayfield, Glossop and Buxton, then west through Disley, Marple, Marple Bridge and Mellor into Stockport. You get the fixed service price before you book, wherever you are on that list, and town pages carry the local detail:
A Service on Its Own, or Boiler Care
If you pay for a service each year anyway, it is worth comparing that with a plan. First Point Boiler Care is a maintenance agreement with three tiers, and the standard annual boiler service sits inside each of them. Prices include VAT.
| Essential | Care | Complete | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | £12.99 | £24.99 | £44.99 |
| Annual boiler service | Included | Included | Included |
| Priority booking | Priority | Enhanced | Highest |
| Eligible labour discount | 5% | 10% | 15% |
| Included breakdown events | None | Up to 2 a year | Up to 3 a year |
| Additional repair labour and parts | Chargeable | Chargeable after the first hour of each included event | Included up to £500 per event and £1,000 a year |
Essential adds an annual visual check of your plumbing and heating, the automatic service reminder, free quotation visits and a digital service record. Care adds up to two eligible breakdown events in each 12-month period, covering attendance, fault diagnosis and up to the first hour of engineer labour on the first diagnostic visit. Complete includes repair labour and eligible replacement parts up to £500 per repair event and £1,000 per membership year, plus an enhanced annual health check. The annual service doesn’t count against those limits.
Doing the sum for your house
Boiler Care Essential
Twelve months of Essential costs more than a single standard service booked on its own. The difference buys priority booking, the 5% labour discount, the plumbing check and the reminder.
A Standalone Service
If the annual visit is all you want and your boiler is young and reliable, a standalone service can be the cheaper route, and we will book it without a plan attached.
Care and Complete make sense once breakdowns are on your mind: an older boiler, a winter you can’t afford to lose heat in, or a household where a £3,000 unexpected bill would hurt. Every tier runs on a 12-month initial term, then rolls monthly with one month’s notice. Breakdown services start after a 30-day waiting period, though the annual service isn’t held back by it, and pre-existing faults aren’t included. We have to accept the boiler onto the plan first, which can involve an initial inspection or service.
Boiler Care members have their own line, open from 6am until midnight every day, and our office books them in before non-members where it can. Priority booking is a place in the queue, and it doesn’t promise a same-day visit.
If we fit your new boiler, the first year of Boiler Care Essential comes with it, annual service included. After that first year you choose: carry on at £12.99 a month, move up to Care or Complete, or stop.
Full terms and the comparison table sit on the Boiler Care page.
Boiler Service Questions
How much does a boiler service cost?
With First Point, a standard service costs £96 including VAT and the full in-depth service £300 including VAT, fixed before the engineer arrives. Glow-worm estimates the 2026 national average at £109 to £120, and Fantastic Services puts a standard service outside London and the South East at £70 to £120.
How often should a boiler be serviced once it is out of warranty?
Once a year, the same as while the guarantee runs. HSE advises servicing gas appliances at least once a year whatever their age, because the safety checks on the flue and the burner don’t depend on the guarantee. An older boiler also gives the engineer more to find.
Can I book a boiler service online?
Yes. Fill in the form on our boiler servicing page or contact page, and our office replies within one working day with a fixed arrival time inside a two-hour window.
How long does a boiler service take?
Allow 1 to 3 hours. The engineer arrives at the fixed time we confirmed, works through the checklist, and the certificate follows by email once the visit is done.
My boiler was fitted by another company. Will you service it?
Yes. An annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer meets the yearly service condition in the guarantees Worcester Bosch, Baxi and Vaillant publish, wherever the boiler was fitted. You keep the certificate either way, and our engineers are Gas Safe registered under number 930763.
Does the service fee include repairs?
No. The service price covers the checklist, the report and the certificate. Repairs start at £96 including VAT for the first hour at our local rate, with no call-out fee, and you get the finding and the price before any repair work begins.
Do you service boilers around New Mills and Stockport?
Yes. Our engineers work from New Mills and service gas boilers within about 20 miles of it: Stockport, Marple and Mellor on the Greater Manchester side, and Glossop, Whaley Bridge, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Buxton in the High Peak. You get the fixed price before you book.
