How Much Does a New Boiler Cost?
A UK guide prices a combi-to-combi swap at £1,200 to £3,500, and the work around the boiler sets where yours sits.

Key Takeaways
- Our fitted prices: Main Eco Tech around £2,640 including VAT, Vaillant £3,960 including VAT, with the flush, the filter and the warranty registration in both.
- The cheapest job in UK price guides is a like-for-like combi swap in the same spot. Converting a regular boiler to a combi runs up to £4,500 in MyJobQuote’s 2026 guide, and a back boiler up to £5,800.
- Five lines push a quote up: moving the boiler, a new flue route, a bigger gas pipe, a cylinder, and the controls building regulations in England ask for.
- Repair or replace comes down to safety, parts and the size of the next repair bill. A boiler’s age on its own settles little.
- Aftercare is in the price: the first year of Boiler Care Essential comes with each boiler we fit.
In This Guide
We fit two boilers, and both prices are public. A Main Eco Tech comes in around £2,640 including VAT (£2,200 plus VAT), and a Vaillant costs £3,960 including VAT (£3,300 plus VAT). Either figure covers the boiler fitted, the old system flushed, a system filter added and the manufacturer warranty registered in your name.
For a national yardstick, the MyJobQuote cost guide puts the average UK boiler installation at around £2,400 and a combi-to-combi swap in the same spot at £1,200 to £3,500. A regular boiler converted to a combi runs to £4,500 in the same guide (MyJobQuote, Boiler Installation Cost, updated 26 August 2026). The spread between those figures comes from the work around the boiler: the type you have, where it sits, the flue, the gas pipe, the cylinder and the controls. We price each of those below, so you can read any boiler quote line by line, ours included.
What Our Two Fitted Prices Include

A cheap headline and a dear one can describe two different jobs. Before you set our figures beside an online price or another installer’s quote, check what sits inside each. Ours carry:
Which? lists a power flush on a five-radiator system as a separate cost of £300 to £750 (Which?, How much does a new boiler cost?, 17 September 2025). That figure is for a full power flush. Our fitted prices include flushing the old system before the new boiler goes in, and our guide to power flush costs covers when a full power flush earns its money on top.
Vaillant is the boiler we prefer to fit. Main Eco Tech is the value option for a job where price leads, and your quote spells out the warranty difference between the two. You pay a deposit a few days before the install, then £400 on the day once you’re happy the job is finished. Our boiler installation page walks through the install from survey to handover.
National Prices, and Where Ours Sit
Price guides online mix boiler-only figures with fitted ones, so compare the installed price and check whether each figure includes VAT. MyJobQuote’s cost guide, updated 26 August 2026, gives these supply-and-fit ranges by job:
| Job | Supply and fit (MyJobQuote, updated 26 August 2026) |
|---|---|
| Combi to combi, same spot Simplest Swap | £1,200 to £3,500 |
| System to system, same spot | £1,250 to £4,000 |
| Regular to regular, same spot | £2,500 to £4,500 |
| System to combi | £1,200 to £3,500 |
| Regular to combi | £2,500 to £4,500 |
| Combi to system or regular | £1,200 to £4,000 |
| Back boiler to combi Starts Highest | £3,200 to £5,800 |
The same guide puts the UK average at around £2,400 and a mid-range gas combi at £1,800 to £2,800. A Main Eco Tech from us at around £2,640 sits inside both combi bands, a little above that average. A Vaillant at £3,960 sits above the top of the combi-to-combi band and inside the system and regular ones. The difference pays for the sizing, the flush, the balancing, the filter, the registration and the aftercare listed above, which is the work that decides how long the new boiler runs well.
The rows that start from a regular boiler or a back boiler begin higher, since those houses carry more old kit around the boiler: tanks in the loft and a vented cylinder, or a gas fire with the boiler behind it. If your quote shows a figure in that range, look for those lines on it.
Combi, System or Regular: How the Type Sets the Combi Boiler Cost
The boiler you have now, and the one you want next, move the price more than the badge on the front.
Combi boilers
A combi heats your radiators and heats hot water on demand from the mains, so the house needs no cylinder and no tanks in the loft. Swapping a combi for a combi in the same spot runs £1,200 to £3,500 in MyJobQuote’s guide, and it is the simplest swap, with no cylinder or loft tanks to deal with. In England a new gas combi also needs one extra efficiency measure fitted alongside it, which we cover under controls below.
System boilers
A system boiler heats a sealed heating circuit and a hot water cylinder, which is often an unvented one fed from the mains. A like-for-like system swap in the same spot runs £1,250 to £4,000 in the same guide. A cylinder at the end of its life adds a line of its own.
Regular boilers
A regular boiler, also called conventional or heat-only, works with a cold water tank and a feed and expansion tank in the loft, plus a vented cylinder in the airing cupboard. Replacing one with another keeps the tanks in place, and at £2,500 to £4,500 it is the dearest of the three like-for-like swaps in MyJobQuote’s guide.
Changing from one type to another
Converting a regular or system boiler to a combi means taking the cylinder out, and with a regular boiler the loft tanks as well, then changing the pipework to suit. MyJobQuote puts a system-to-combi conversion at £1,200 to £3,500 and a regular-to-combi one at £2,500 to £4,500, and Which? puts the extra over a straight swap at £400 to £800. Going the other way, from a combi to stored hot water, Which? adds £350 to £750 for a vented cylinder or £900 to £1,400 for an unvented one.
A combi suits plenty of homes with one bathroom. A house where two showers run at once, or where the mains flow is weak, can be better served by stored hot water, and the survey settles which. If your house still has a back boiler behind a gas fire, that job has its own row in the table at £3,200 to £5,800, since the fire and the boiler behind it both come out and the new boiler needs a flue of its own. We’d want to see one of those in person rather than quote it from photos.
Five Jobs That Push a Boiler Replacement Cost Up
Each of these can turn a straight swap into a bigger job. Where the flue, the pipework or the gas run needs more than a straight swap, your quote prices that work and explains it before anything starts.

1. Moving the boiler
Leaving the boiler where it is costs least. A move means new gas, water and condensate pipework, a new flue position and making good the old spot. MyJobQuote’s guide, updated 6 October 2026, puts a move within the same room at £500 to £800, to another room on the same floor at £700 to £1,200, between floors at £800 to £1,400 and into a loft at £900 to £1,500. If the move is about freeing a kitchen cupboard, weigh that figure against the space you gain.
2. The flue
The flue carries the boiler’s exhaust out of the house, and the new boiler takes the flue kit its maker specifies. A short run straight out through the wall behind the boiler is the simplest. A flue that has to climb through the roof, or turn a corner to reach a permitted position on the outside wall, adds parts and labour, and a roof job can need access equipment. Some houses also need a plume kit to steer the vapour away from a door, a window or a neighbour’s wall. We name the flue route on the quote and price it there.
3. The gas pipe
A combi heating hot water at full output can draw more gas than the boiler it replaces, and the pipe from the meter has to carry that flow. An undersized run means a bigger pipe. Which? puts a bigger gas supply line at £100 to £400, and MyJobQuote prices extending or rerouting gas pipework at £45 to £85 a metre. If your run needs upgrading, the upgrade shows on the quote as its own line.
4. The cylinder
With a system or regular boiler, the question is whether the cylinder you have can stay. A sound cylinder carries on. One that leaks, or one whose coil has failed, needs replacing, and building regulations ask for a replacement cylinder to have electronic temperature control such as a cylinder thermostat. For a sense of scale, Which? puts adding a vented cylinder at £350 to £750 and an unvented one at £900 to £1,400.
5. Controls, and the rules that set them
Building regulations in England decide part of this line for you. Under Approved Document L, Volume 1 (2021 edition incorporating 2023 amendments):
- A replacement gas boiler needs an ErP efficiency of at least 92%.
- A new gas combi needs at least one extra measure: flue gas heat recovery, weather compensation, load compensation, or a smart thermostat with automation and optimisation.
- When a boiler is replaced, each heated room needs its own thermostatic control. The usual way to meet that is a room thermostat plus thermostatic radiator valves on the radiators outside the thermostat’s room.
- A boiler interlock goes in, so the boiler stays off when nothing is calling for heat.
The 2026 edition takes over on 24 March 2027 and keeps the extra measure for combis. Which? prices a smart thermostat at £100 to £250 and a smart radiator valve at £35 to £80 each. A quote that leaves these out looks cheaper on paper and leaves the job short of the regulations, so ask any installer which measure their price includes.
When to Replace a Boiler, and When a Repair Wins
A £300 repair can beat a £3,000 boiler, and on a failing boiler with no parts left the sums run the other way. The signs below tell you more than the age on the data plate.
Signs a replacement makes sense
- An engineer has classed it unsafe and the fix costs too much. A boiler labelled “Danger Do Not Use” stays off, and HSE states that it is illegal for anyone to use a gas appliance they suspect is unsafe (HSE, Gas safety: home owners, page dated 6 November 2024). If making it safe costs a large slice of a new boiler, replacing it spends the money once.
- Parts for your model are hard to find. A breakdown that waits weeks for a part leaves you cold for those weeks, and a part that is no longer made ends the boiler’s working life.
- The breakdowns keep coming. Two or three call-outs in one winter on the same boiler add up, and each one is a cold evening as well as a bill.
- The house has changed around it. An extension, a loft room or a second bathroom changes the heat and hot water your house needs, and a boiler sized for the old layout can fall short.
Signs a repair is the better buy
- One failed part on a boiler that is otherwise sound, with parts still available.
- A boiler still inside its manufacturer warranty, where the claim goes through the manufacturer. An annual service keeps most manufacturer warranties valid, wherever the boiler was fitted.
- A fault found on a service, before it turns into a breakdown in a cold snap.
What finding out costs
A repair visit from us carries no call-out fee. The first hour on site is £96 including VAT at our local rate, parts are extra, and a part on order can mean a second visit. Before you spend anything, the engineer sets the repair figure against the replacement figure. If the boiler is due its yearly check anyway, our boiler servicing visit runs the full checklist, and our guide to boiler service costs and how often to book sets out both service prices. The office takes bookings from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. For water through a ceiling, start at our emergency page.
Before You Buy Another Gas Boiler, Price a Heat Pump
A Vaillant fitted by us costs £3,960 including VAT. Set that beside the government’s own figures: on Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants paid between April and June 2026, a quarter of air-to-water heat pump jobs cost more than £15,627 with VAT, before the grant came off (DESNZ, Boiler Upgrade Scheme statistics, August 2026, published 24 September 2026).
The scheme takes £7,500 off an eligible air source heat pump in England and Wales, and homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas connection get £9,000 until March 2027. The government sets those amounts, so check the current figures on GOV.UK before you sign for either system. At £7,500 off, the £15,627 job comes down to £8,127, which leaves £4,167 between it and the Vaillant.
Running costs decide whether that gap pays back. Under the October to December 2026 price cap, electricity costs 26.32p a unit and gas 7.97p, so a heat pump has to turn each unit of electricity into more than 3.3 units of heat across the year to beat gas on the unit price (Ofgem). We design for 3.5 to 4.0 where the house allows it, and that figure goes into your quote.
Our heat pump installation page sets out the whole process from survey to handover, and the heat pump costs guide works the running cost through for a typical house. Grant claims run through MCS certification and ours is in progress, so ask at the survey and you get the current position.

Gas Heating On Both Sides Of The Line
- Gas boilers heat four in five homes on both sides of the county line.
- At the 2021 Census, 103,947 of Stockport’s 126,649 households heated with mains gas alone, and in High Peak the figure was 32,305 of 40,774 (ONS, Census 2021 table TS046, pulled from Nomis on 13 October 2026).
Disley Households On Mains Gas Alone
In Disley, 85% of the ward’s 2,108 households were on mains gas alone, and Furness Vale sat at 523 of 639.
The houses differ more than the fuel does, and the five lines above follow the house. Valuation Office records date 40% of Furness Vale’s homes before 1919 and a quarter of those across Disley and Lyme Park. A combi in the kitchen cupboard of a stone terrace in Whaley Bridge, a system boiler and cylinder in a detached house in Marple, and a regular boiler with tanks in the loft of an older semi in Buxton are three different quotes. Each one shows the boiler price and, beside it, the lines that house needs.
We work out from our base in New Mills to Whaley Bridge, Furness Vale, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Chinley, Buxton, Glossop, Hayfield, Disley, Marple, Marple Bridge, Mellor, Romiley and Stockport. Your quote states your figure wherever you are. Local detail lives on our town pages: new boilers in Stockport, boiler installation in Marple, Glossop, Buxton, New Mills, Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith.
After It’s Fitted: Boiler Care
Each boiler we fit carries twelve months of Boiler Care Essential from install day: the first annual service, the reminder, priority booking and 5% off eligible additional labour. When the twelve months are up, you decide: keep Essential at £12.99 a month including VAT, step up to Care at £24.99 or Complete at £44.99, or end it.
Plans start on a 12-month initial term and run month to month after that. They are a service and maintenance agreement, and the full comparison table and terms sit on our Boiler Care page.
Boiler Cost Questions
How much does a new combi boiler cost?
With us, around £2,640 including VAT for a Main Eco Tech and £3,960 including VAT for a Vaillant on a straight swap, fitted, flushed, filtered and registered. Your quote states the figure for your address. Moving the boiler, a new flue route or a bigger gas pipe each get their own line.
How long does a boiler replacement take?
One to two days on site. We finish nine in ten straight swaps in a day, and the more involved jobs run to two. The quote gives you the date and how long we’re in the house, and we fit the same week where the diary allows.
Is a Vaillant worth £1,320 more than a Main Eco Tech?
The gap is about £1,320 including VAT (£1,100 plus VAT). Either brand gets the same installation, the 2-year workmanship guarantee and the first year of Boiler Care Essential, and your quote states each brand’s manufacturer warranty so you can weigh the extra against it.
Should I replace a 15-year-old boiler?
Safety, parts for your model, how often it has broken down and the cost of the next repair settle it, and the engineer weighs those on a service visit.
How do I pay for a new boiler?
A deposit a few days before the install, then £400 on the day once you’re happy the job is finished.
Will I get a certificate for the new boiler?
Yes. In England and Wales a Gas Safe registered business has to notify the local council about a new gas boiler, and it does that through Gas Safe Register, which then sends you a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate (Gas Safe Register, Notification of gas work in England and Wales). We’re on the register under number 930763, and you can check it before we visit.
Do you fit new boilers around New Mills, Stockport and Glossop?
Yes. We work from New Mills and fit boilers within about 20 miles of it, from Stockport and Marple on the Greater Manchester side to Glossop, Whaley Bridge and Buxton in the High Peak. Your quote states your figure wherever you are, and the town pages above carry the local detail.
